| We know these places as hospitals, but in this country most of them are called 'Clinicas', or clinics in English. The hospitals, or clinicas, on this page are NOT free, but what we would call 'Private" hospitals. The 'Public', or free hospitals, will be listed on another page. |

| El
Valle is one of the leading hospitals on the island. I spoke with the
gentleman in charge of Admissions, who gave me a guided tour. Of
course, we could not enter the area with the babies, but it was clearly
visable once they pulled the curtain back. He told me they have 5 beds, and are equipped with everything necessary to handle premature babies. I specifically asked about ventilation equipment and chest tubes, since I know that premature babies are susceptable to RDS (Respiratory Distress Syndrome) He reassured me they are well equipped, and have a Neonatologist on call 24/7. You can come in to the Emergency Department, or if you have an obstetrician he/she can refer you to them. They take payment in the form of Bolivares, Dollars, Euros, and all major credit/debit cards except American Express. He also told me that if you have health insurance in your home country they have a doctor who specializes in International insurances to help you file your claim. |

MEDICO MANEIRO Maneiro St and Monagas St, Sector Cruz de la Mision Porlamar - Margarita Island Telephone: (0295)274.41.11/274.54.32 Update: Aug. 2010 I recently found out from a friend of mine that her OB doctor had recommended this facility for her delivery. He said it is clean, the staff is well qualified and good to work with, and the costs are reasonable. He told her he has delivered many babies there. He said there are two main drawbacks. One is their lack of specialized equipment and supplies should she need a c-section, or the baby need specialized attention. The other is that it is in an un-safe part of town and no secure parking. My friend opted for a 'home' birth with her doctor in attendance, but due to complication had to have a c-section and was admitted to a larger clinic. Now, I also learned from this same friend that a friend of hers went to this clinic with severe pain. He had a really bad case of kidney stones. She stated that he felt he was treated well and the doctor was really good. |

MEDICO LA FE I
don't have an address for them, but you can't miss them. They are
located directly across the divided highway from Rattan Plaza (where
Ekipa is located). It can be reached by bus when necessary.
Tele: (0295) 262.27.11 - 262.00.90 - 262.25.94 La Fe has
24-hour emergency services, as well as surgical, obstetric
and inpatient services. One of my lady friends had to have an emergency
c-section, and the doctor told her to meet him here. She had very good
care. These photos are not the best as they were taken in a hurry from
across the street.
The taller
section of the building houses the Emergency Dept on the
first floor, and the inpatient rooms are above that. I'm not sure where
everything else is located as it has been a few years since I was
there.
|
I did a
couple of night shifts there at that time when a friend of mine
asked me to watch over her husband who had been in a major car
accident. The care is very good here on the island, but the night
shift...well, I guess it has to do with a certain level of
comfort...knowing there is someone you trust watching your
loved one.
And in most inpatient facilities here, families are expected to help with the patient. We'll get into that in another section though.
